The "varied carols" that Walt Whitman hear America singing were not all in the English language. American literature was created in all the tongues that the immigrants brought with them to America. American Yiddish literature is an important part of American culture and of the 4,000 year old heritage of the Jewish people.
This first volume of a two-volume anthology includes poetry, short stories, novels, essays, memoirs, drama and literary criticism, by 48 outstanding Yiddish writers including Sholom Aleichem, Abraham Cahan, Morris Rosenfeld, Abraham Reisen, David Pinsky, Sholem Asch, Anna Margolin, Moyshe Nadir, Mani Leib, Isaac Raboy and Moyshe Leib Halpern.
